Close to 8 Million people leave church annually; reDiscover Church is trying to change that

Research has show that almost 8 million Americans leave church every year. Only one in five Americans attend church on a regular basis. Outreach Inc. has decided to do something to change that by offering reDiscover Church, a 37-page booklet that can help church members reach out to family, friends, neighbors and co-workers.

The reDiscover Church booklet discusses 10 reasons why people leave church, and why they come back. The booklet also helps equip members for national “Back to Church Sunday”. Sept. 12, a movement that seeks to reach people who once attended church and invites them to a special Sunday service.

These booklets are customizable for individual churches. Stock booklets cost $0.99 each while customizable books cost $1.59 each.

Do you think that there is a real problem with people leaving church? The rise of mega churches can be a little deceiving. I once heard someone say that more people are joining churches, members are just being recycled between congregations. I think I am starting to believe that statement.

In my opinion, outstanding pastors, choirs and worship teams don’t grow churches. Outstanding and passionate church members do.

Don’t get me wrong, having an amazing pastor or worship team helps a little. However a dedicated group of people is required to reach people and bring them into the church.

Many of us struggle with effective evangelism. We don’t always know what to say and how to say it. These skills aren’t always taught in church. Having a booklet like reDiscover can be helpful.

What strategies have you used to bring people to church?

Eight million people leave church every year. What do you plan to do about that?
