Gospel legend Walter Hawkins passes

Multi-award winning Gospel legend and pastor Walter Hawkins died this past Sunday. He was 61. After a long battle with pancreatic cancer, he passed away at his home in Ripon, California.

The term legend gets thrown around far too often. When referring to Walter Hawkins, using the term legend would be an understatement.

I’m not sure anything I could say would do justice to the contribution he made to Gospel music and to the kingdom of God. Bishop Hawkins was an amazing singer and songwriter. He blazed a trail for many of the artist we have come to love today.

Here are some of the sentiments members of the Gospel community expressed on Twitter:

Talk about beautiful, true gospel music. I have always enjoyed hs music. I have one of his cds now that I listen too always. When I heard he had passed, I was shocked. I grew up listening to him. I'm 36 now. One of my favorite Gospel songs is ” What Is This”. This song has always ministered to me for years. He was an ambassador for Christ, you can feel it in his music. This is one soul you know is resting in the peacefull arms of Jesus.
