Is your church neglecting the singles?

A recent study conducted by The Barna Group found that “religious activities are typically missing single adults, especially those who have never been married.” Less than half of all Americans are unmarried. According to the Barna study, two-thirds of the people that are heavily active and volunteer in church activities are married.

Has the church been ignoring people that are single? I know there are many churches that have ministries for married couples, but only a few of them have ministries for singles.

In churches, people tend to create ministries based on personal interest or a large need that they may see in the congregation. If married couples are a large portion of the church population, then it makes sense why marriage and family ministries greatly outnumber singles ministries.

The Dating Issue
People often say that church is a good place to meet the opposite sex. I think some people are hesitant to launch a ministry for singles because they don’t want create a dating service.

Whether a person is married or single, we all have issues that we struggle with. A singles ministry would be a great forum for single Christians to help each other deal with their issues and encourage one another as they go through life.

Sure, there will be people who may only participate because they are hunting for a future mate. Hopefully, an effective singles ministry will give these people the proper tools to help them seek God regarding whom they should be with.

The Role of Singles in the Church
It may become hard for singles to get heavily involved with church activities because they don’t feel a connection. We all want to be around people that share similar interests with us.

People always talk about looking for way to grow their church. According to the research from Barna, there is a population that makes up half of America that is being effectively reached. What are we going to do about it?

What do you think? Do you think the church does a good job of ministering to singles?

Great topic. And I'm LOL @ the Living Single picture! (those were the days…)

At least here in Atlanta, there are several churches that do events and activities with singles in mind. In fact, there is a White Water rafting trip at one church, a Labor Day retreat at another, and monthly dinners at local restaurants sponsored by another church.

A lot of single people don't want to be, and by having activities sponsored by a church, you can help to pull singles away from other tempting activities and encourage more participation and growth, a win-win.
