Fox 8 News reports that in a recent sermon Rev. Christopher Benek discusses a plan where NBA star LeBron James would remain in Cleveland in stead of going to another team in free agency.

Basically, Rev. Benek thinks that, “LeBron James should agree to a three year contract with the Cleveland Cavaliers to play for one dollar each season.”

According to Rev. Benek, LeBron would be honoring God and showing great humility by turning down a multi-million dollar contract. He notes that this would also allow Cleveland to sign all-star caliber players in an effort to win a championship.

I don’t believe that anyone should simply turn down salary or wages in order to honor God or set an example. If God wants a person to do this, he’ll tell them.

Some people may say that LeBron doesn’t need a salary, because he’ll get plenty of money in endorsements. Endorsements are not guaranteed sources of income.

We all (including LeBron) have the responsibility to take care of our families. LeBron can show God great honor by using the money to take care of his children and his children’s children. He could also honor God by tithing and giving money to various charities.

The video of the entire sermon is below in four parts. If you just watch part 1, you may be a little upset. Plus, you will miss the point that Rev. Benek is ultimately trying to make.

In the end, he ties it all together. He also puts his money where his mouth is.

Take a look at the sermon. Then, post a comment and let me know what you think. How would you feel if your pastor preached a sermon like this?
