Recap: Season 3 of BET’s Sunday Best, Episode 2

Sunday-BestI just got finished watching episode 2 of Sunday Best Season 3. I have one word to describe it, uneventful.

This audition was held in Detroit, Michigan, but you wouldn’t know it by the level of talent that showed up. People always talk about how Detroit has tons of singing talent. After watching this episode, it is pretty clear to me that the top singers either stayed home or didn’t make it past the BET executives.

Many people like try to blame BET for what are perceived problems in Black America. I can’t blame anybody at BET for what I saw tonight. You can only work with the talent available to you when it comes to singing competitions.

The judges for this episode were Donnie McClurkin and Mary Mary (Erica and Tina Campbell). Although the talent was lacking, I found the judges to be fairly entertaining and full of some good one-liners.

My memories of last season must not be that vivid, because I don’t remember Tina Campbell being that tough. Watching her reminded me of Muyiwa Olarewaju from Nigeria. It would be very interesting to see the two of them on the same panel. I don’t think anybody would get to the next round.

After all of the Detroit auditions were done, five contestants made it through to the next round. From what I heard and saw, I can’t honestly say that any of the five that made it are front-runners to win the whole thing. We’ll just have to see what talent develops from the other cities.

Did you see the Detroit auditions? What do you think?

I, too, was disappointed with the lack of talent at the Detroit auditions. I think that you are correct in asserting that the top singers either stayed home or didn’t make it past the BET executives.” I differ, however, with you on the judges being “entertaining”. I DO remember last season, as well as, season one. BeBe Winans was particularly mean-spirited. Perhaps, Donnie & Tina feel they have to step up their cruel quotient to make up for his absence. While this may be the church’s version of American Idol, I don’t see the need to attack people a la Simon Cowell! Do we really need to prove how judgmental church folk are?? I think not!!

Season 3 auditions in Detroit was not that bad, I think the Judges are horrible, and I am really surprised by Erica, not Tina, she is the same as last year, horrible, I think they let some good singers go, if one say no, then all say no? that is not how it should be, There were some good females in Detroit just because they don’t show feelings or spunk at the time of the audition who says they are not going to tear it up once the competion starts, because last year, I know some of the guys were much better than the winner, and you let them go, the judges needs to lighten up before they have only a few competing or no one watching this year.
Donnie is not a perfectional judge, and to hurt someone feelings when they hit a pitch is unprofessional, nothing wrong with ” I’m sorry it did not work out” not, “singing is not for you”, it may not be for them professionally, but it could be for them in their hearts or at church.
These are my suggestions to better the show, my opionion, so far Season 1 was the best!

I totally disagree. The level of talent in detroit was wonderful. I especially enjoyed the 19 year old from the U.K. For someone so young she understood the power of just ministering the song instead of the riffs. She was not only beautiful on the outside but also on the inside. Thats what a young and dieing christian world needs to be exposed to. We give people like beyonce and rihanne too much credit and we put down our young people who truly want to sing gospel music. I truly believe that Mesie is annointed and appointed for such a time as this. You gotta love her!

I agree Mesie was my favorite audition. There is such a calmness about her. I pray that she goes imensely far because I know she will be blessed.

I too enjoyed her audition. I loved her tone and the smoothness of her execution. I would buy any cd she puts out. She is going to be HUGE mark my words. I also enjoyed Dward Davis, he is truly blessed by God. Also the young lady named Quianna was excellent she has a beautifully toned and controlled voice. I am excited to see them on the live show.

I agree with you all for the most part. The people who gave good auditions were really good. However, there was a lot of bad that outnumbered the good in my opinion. I am looking forward to seeing many of the contestants in the next round.

I think that both Elder and Leandria should tie for the 1st place. They both did very well in all the audition. I have been watching them from day one and they are both winners in my book and the Lord's book, I am sure. They are both anointed, empowered, delivered and God's anointing is all over them.
God Bless their hearts. They have both inspired me to sing for the Lord even more. Amen.
