Simple ways to serve: Honor community servants

I was talking to a friend the other day and he shared with me an interesting service project that his old church frequently did. I liked the idea, so I thought I would share it with you.

All of our communities have police departments and fire departments that work hard to protect and serve us. Every one in awhile it would be nice for us to serve them.

Here is what you can do. Take an edible gift to your local police or fire department. This gift can be a fruit basket, baked goods, or anything else you like. My friend’s church used donuts as their gift of choice.

When you take your item(s), let them know what church you are from and that this just a gift to thank them for their service. You should also let them know that you and your congregation are praying for them.

After you leave the station, do a prayer walk around the block where the police department or fire department is located. Pray for God’s hand of protection over the officers and the community that they serve.

That is it. No elaborate planning needed.

What do you think? Please share any simple service ideas that you may have.
