On Monday night, I participated in a discussion that Carlos Whittker was holding on Ustream. This discussion was part of the Conversations From The Red Chair initiative that Whittaker is doing with Jeremy Camp and John Mark McMillan. The three artists are going around the country and having conversations with worship leaders about the best practices for leading worship in the local church.

During the broadcast, Carlos Whittaker posed the following question, “Do you need to be a great vocalist in order to be a worship leader?” He continued asking which is more important leadership skills or vocal skills, as it relates to leading worship.

Here are the opinions that some people shared on Twitter:

“Being a great vocalist can limit your ability to lead worship if you put songs in a range the congregation can’t follow.”

“If the worship leader isn’t worshipping God then they’re not doing it right… vocals are secondary.”

“I feel like you can be a great worship leader even if you don’t have a great voice.”

“Being able to lead people into the presence of God is WAY more important than being a great vocalist.”

“Simply, no! HOWEVUHHHH—you gotta carry some kind of note, right? I’d prefer leadership over vocals.”

“Great voice doesn’t make you great leader. And you can be a great leader w/o a great voice (Willie Nelson)”

In my opinion, leadership is much more important than vocal ability. I think that it is important for a worship leader to be able to hear God and lead the congregation in the direction that God wants them to go. Worship leaders will be so much more effective if they focus on leading people according to God’s will first, and focus on vocal quality second.

Let me know what you think. In your opinion, is it important for a worship leader to be a good vocalist?

The Worship Tour is also featuring local church leaders exclusive Q&A sessions. These sessions, “Conversations from the Red Chair” presented by Integrity Live, will be an open conversation with Jeremy Camp, Carlos Whittaker, and John Mark McMillan to encourage and fellowship with local church leaders before the show. For the registered price of $25 (limited number of tickets at each date), each church leader will receive entrance to the Conversations Pre-Show, one premium-seat ticket to the concert and a church leader gift bag including song sheets and chord charts. Registration and dates are available now at this site: http://jeremycamp.com/conversations/

Tangle.com, the world’s largest Christian online community, announced a multi-year licensing agreement with Christian recorded music, distribution, and music publishing company EMI Christian Music Group (EMI CMG) for audio and video streaming, giving users of the world’s largest online Christian community unlimited access to some of the biggest names in gospel music – including TobyMac, Chris Tomlin, Steven Curtis Chapman, Amy Grant, Jeremy Camp, Newsboys, Underoath, David Crowder*Band, Thousand Foot Krutch, Matthew West and Bill & Gloria Gaither.

The partnership brings together tangle.com’s average of 2.5 million unique monthly visitors and nearly a million registered users with the digital distribution leader in Christian music. Under the agreement EMI CMG gives tangle.com users access to authorized videos and recordings, including user-generated content, of all EMI CMG and digitally distributed label artists. Tangle.com will provide content aggregation, distribution and syndication, including ongoing promotions that will feature EMI CMG artists in highly visible positioning.

There are a ton of Christian social networks and Christian video sites. This move now clearly places tangle above them all. Tangle.com will now be able to deliver content and experiences that other sites can’t. If you are a frequent visitor to a particular Christian social networking site, I suggest you enjoy it while you can. It may be out of business within the next year. Don’t be surprised if you see other labels follow EMI’s lead.

Are you a member of tangle.com? Does this move make you want to join?

GRAMMY-nominated artist Jeremy Camp is kicking off 2010 to reach listeners with his music, message and ministry with another headline acoustic tour. Camp will launch his spring tour “Jeremy Camp Live Unplugged” with special guest and wife Adie on February 26th in Illinois (see dates below). This tour was created with Camp’s fans in mind, providing an intimate night of worship and fellowship with Jeremy as well as Adie, who is releasing a new album in March.

The tour will once again be sponsored by Compassion International and feature Speaking Louder Ministries, which involves Jeremy and team reaching out locally to a set outreach in each market.

Last year was a highlight year for Camp with the launch of his ministry “Speaking Louder Ministries,” a fall headline tour, second American Music Award nomination and continued radio success. In addition, Camp ended the decade with Billboard recognition as the No. 3 Christian Artist of the Decade. Camp also had five songs in the Billboard Top 50 Christian Songs of the Decade (songs listed below).

Jeremy Camp is headlining a tour this fall that will feature Dove Female artist of the Year Natalie Grant and Bebo Norman. The “Speaking Louder Than Before” The Tour will span 30+ cities and begin in Florida on September 10.

Tickets started going on sale on July 10. They are doing a special promotion with iTunes and iTickets. Anyone who purchases tickets through iTickets from July 10 to July 24 will receive a code for two free downloads at iTunes (“Beyond Measure” by Jeremy Camp and “Never Saw You Coming” by Bebo Norman).

Earlier this year Camp launched Speaking Louder Ministries. Its purpose is to bring a raised awareness to the local outreaches in the cities that Jeremy Camp performs, help equip the church body and local community to get involved in ministry together, and impact the needs of the community/organization with physical goods.
