The Minister’s Guide To Sin, Sex and Relationships: Lesson 7 – Guard Your Eyes, Mind and Heart

There are a lot of things in the media (TV, internet, movies) that can seriously alter your psyche. More specifically, many of the things we watch can cause us to develop lust in our hearts. On the surface, it is not a sin to watch TV, movies or content online. However for some of us there are certain images that can be detrimental to our relationships with both God and man.

When we watch certain things they trigger various responses in our psyche. Normally when people talk about things like this they are referring to pornography.  What I’m referring to goes beyond pornography.  We may see a man or a woman on the screen and start to desire them in lustful way. This could occur on normal network TV. We start to imagine what it would be like if we were having sex with them.

Matthew 5:28 instructs us that if we look at someone lustfully we are committing adultery. Although we may not have done anything physically, the actions of our hearts and minds have caused us to sin against God.

If you constantly allow your mind and heart to desire someone else, where does that leave your spouse? All of a sudden, your fantasies will begin to supersede the reality that you have with your spouse. Nothing your spouse could say or do will equal the fantasy in your mind. This can lead to the slow deterioration of your marriage. In addition, you will find yourself worshiping your fantasy instead of worshiping God.

Lust doesn’t only happen with people you see on TV or movies. It can also occur with people you know and see everyday.

What To Do
We must constantly guard our eyes, hearts and minds (Proverbs 4:23-27). There are a number of things that we probably just shouldn’t consume. Examine the things you watch and read. Place those things before God. Ask him if there is anything that he wants to remove from your life.

You may need to get help from someone to keep you accountable. Covenant Eyes is a good program that helps deal with temptation on the Internet. This software sends emails and reports to people you select. They will know if you have been visiting certain websites that you are working to avoid.

Lust is a silent trap that can really destroy someone’s life. You may think that there is nothing wrong with looking around or a couple of thoughts every now and then. My response to you would be why? Why would you want to do something that can distract you from God’s purpose for your life?

Do you have any thoughts about this? How do you prevent yourself from subcoming to lust?
