For a long time I have heard speculation about various gospel artists being gay. I thought I would offer my perspective on the topic.
Are there gay gospel artists? Honestly, I don’t know. Sure, there are people in the gospel music industry who have tendencies that many may consider to be less than masculine. Yes, I get a little uneasy when some male choir directors “drop it like it’s hot.” Yes, there are certain people who carry themselves in a manner that many would consider to be less than manly. However, I’m just not to the point where I’m ready to say that a particular person is gay.
Let’s get back to my previous question. Are there gay gospel artists? If you step out of your emotions for a second, you can easily answer that question. There probably are gay and lesbian gospel artists. Before you get too excited, hear me out. Statistics say that about 4% of the population is gay or lesbian. You would like to think that Christian industries are exempt from such statistics, but I highly doubt it. We’re not exempt from other sins. People call themselves Christians and do things like having pre-marital sex, lying, stealing, cheating on their spouse and watching pornography. Why should gay or lesbian activity be any different.
Instead of spreading rumors about people, let’s take another approach towards this. If you suspect that a gospel artist is gay, take the matter up with the Lord. Pray and ask God to show you if this person is living according to his will. God may show you that a certain gospel artist is not living a life that pleases Him. If that is the case, all you need to do is stop supporting their ministry. Stop buying their CDs and stop going to their concerts. There is no need to bad mouth anyone or run their name through the mud. Those actions would not please God either.
This line of thinking should not just be limited to gospel artist. It is very likely that there are preachers, teachers, pastors, evangelists and missionaries who are gay and lesbian.
What I am saying may be a little hurtful to some of you. It is not my intent for any of us to go seeking out gospel artist and preachers to find out if they are gay or not. Let’s remember our faith is not in any man or woman. Our faith is in God. Man or woman may have some shortcomings, but God is still perfect and absolutely amazing.
I suggest you use your energy to pray for any artist or preacher the Lord lays on your heart. If their lifestyle is not in line with God’s will, pray that the Lord would speak to them and guide them in a way the He finds pleasing. There are a large number of gospel artists and ministers that are living lives that please God. Ask him to point you towards their ministries.
Please feel free to share your thoughts on this topic.
