University of Alabama Shooting Causes Us to Reflect on Our Purpose in Life

What defines you? Wait. Let me rephrase that. What do you allow to define you? Does your job, your ministry, your family, or other people define you?

Last week a woman named Amy Bishop killed three people at the University of Alabama. Many people believe that Bishop did the heinous act because she had been denied tenure.

If we assume that this is true, then it is clear that Amy Bishop fell into a trap that happens to so many of us. She allowed herself to be defined by her job. She place her value and self-worth into a position and when it was take away from her, tragedy happened.

In case you didn’t know, God love each and every one of us. In fact, He is crazy about us! Let’s not forget that He is the creator of the entire world. His opinion is the only one that matters.

Many of us struggle trying to find our purpose in life. Our purpose lies in God. If you allow your purpose to be defined by your family, your job or anything else, it will only give you temporary satisfaction.

I wish she could have known where her true value lies. We can all find our value in the same place, God. We need to come to the realization that what other people say about us really doesn’t matter. Our self-esteem should not rest on whether someone else thinks we’re smart enough, cute enough or smart enough. All that matters is what God thinks about us.

Here if you struggle with identifying your own self-worth or if your identity rests in something else other than God, then there are two books that I highly recommend that you read: “The Purpose Driven Life” by Rick Warren and “The Search For Significance” by Robert S. McGee. I think these are two must read books for any Christian.

When you pray,  please remember the family of those that have lost their lives in this tragic shooting.

Please share your thoughts on purpose, significance and self-worth. Have you read “The Purpose Driven Life” or “The Search for Significance”?
