By now you have probably heard the latest news about well known Gospel recording artist Ton3x (Tonex). If you don’t know what I am talking about, let me quickly bring you up to speed.
Ton3x recently appeared on The Lexi Show on The Word Network. In the interview, Ton3x told Lexi that he had sex with another man in the past and he continues to be attracted to men. So, there you have it. Ton3x admitted on national TV that he is gay or bisexual. While many people were shocked, there are other people who think that most male gospel artists are gay, so this news did not come as a surprise at all. I am not one of the people that think this way.
Now, it is time for you to toss out your collection of Ton3x music, right? Wrong! I would urge you to slow down before you start name calling and erasing someone from Christianity.
For the record…I firmly believe that God’s intent is for a man to be with a woman.
Why should any of us abandon our music collections just because of someone’s current lifestyle? The truth is, we don’t know what Ton3x’s lifestyle was at the time he wrote and recorded some of his music. No matter what his life was like at the time wasn’t there still truth in the words he sang? Is it possible for us to separate the man from the message? If a song lifts up the name of God, does it matter who sings the song? Can’t we still use that song to enter into the presence of the Lord?
Should we completely separate ourselves from Ton3x and his music? Think about what was going on in King David’s life when he wrote some of the Psalms. Think about how Kirk Franklin was involved in ministry even though he was battling a pornography addiction. I think that if we really knew what was going on in the lives of some of gospel artists and other ministers, we might initially be inclined to throw away a lot of CDs and DVDs.
I’m not saying that any of us should immediately book Ton3x to come and preach at our church. However, as our brother in Christ we should continue to keep him in our prayers and not just write him off. I won’t be praying that Ton3x stops being attracted to men. I’ll be praying that God’s will be done in his life
As much as we all try, none of us fully understands the thoughts of God. He may be taking Ton3x through this for a specific purpose. I encourage you to pray and allow the Lord to lead you from there.
