Who counts the money at your chruch?

moneyI’m always fascinated by what types of people hold offices at churches. Today, I want to talk about the people who count the money. Many churches refer to them as treasurers or trustees.

In all seriousness, how do you get to be one of those people? I know some churches have elections. If that is your church, I’m not talking about you. For those of you without elections, I need you to help me out with this one.

We can all agree that being the person who counts the offering is not the most glamorous job in Christianity. I’m sure you have heard people get prophesied to before. It is likely that you heard a prophet tell someone that God called has called them to be a preacher, a teacher, an evangelist, or even a worship leader. Have you noticed that you almost never hear a prophet tell someone “Son, I hear God saying that he has called you to count the offering.”

I have been in churches where some of the members are very well educated and many of them have advanced degrees. I have met church members who were doctors, lawyers and business owners. Are these the people who help count and manage the money? No. I’m slightly amazed that there are many churches where the “money people” don’t have any eduction beyond high school or a professional background in dealing with money.

Before I continue, let me just say that I am not trying to come off as some sort of educated snob. I am not trying to bash people who do not have college degrees.

When you think about it realistically, if someone is a treasurer/trustee, then he/she is the CFO of the church. Shouldn’t any organization want to have the absolute best person possible in this position. Does it benefit the church if certain people have been in control of the money because they have been doing it “down through the years.”

Ask yourself this question. Is the the treasurer/trustee(s) of your church someone who just counts the money and signs checks or do the have an actual financial vision for your church?

How does your church appoint or elect the people who handle the money?
