Who is the next female gospel headliner?

yolanda-adams2Music genres are often carried by stars. The gospel music industry is no different. Yolanda Adams is arguably the top female solo artist in gospel today. When you look at vocal ability, popularity, album sales, anointing/ministry and overall appeal Yolanda has to be the choice for the number one spot. I’m sure some of you would make an argument for CeCe Winans. I don’t think you could go wrong with either one. If I had to choose one, it would be Yolanda, but CeCe would be a close second.

I keep asking myself one question. Who’s next? What female solo artist will be at the top of the industry in a couple of years? Let me clarify something. When I say “next”, I’m referring to someone who is a relatively new artist or under the age of 40.

When considering a headliner, a couple of factors need to be taken into account. First, dynamic vocal ability is a must.  I know there is a huge double standard, but people expect female artists to be amazing singers and they don’t have that same expectations when it comes to men. That being said, there will never be a female Kirk Franklin. I don’t think a female who is not an amazing singer will ever be at the top of the gospel industry. That eliminates Martha Munizzi. She has a great ministry, but she is not in the Yolanda/CeCe class vocally (for the record, few people are).

The way I see it, I am currently left with three options: Damita Haddon, Joann Rosario and Kierra “Kiki” Sheard.

Damita Haddon will always be considered as Deitrick’s wife. I think even she knows it. That’s why her stage name is Damita without the last name. I’m sure she wants to be viewed as an independent artist, but I think most people will have trouble making that separation.

For some reason, Joann Rosario just hasn’t caught on like I thought she would. I don’t know why. Her music is good and she definitely has a commercial look. Her career may increase, but if she hasn’t achieved superstar status by now, I don’t think she ever will.

That leaves us with Kiki Sheard. She definitely has the vocal ability. In addition, her popularity is continuing to grow, especially among young believers. If you take her weight loss and the fact that she is appearing on TV more and more, the result is a definite rise in her commercial appeal.

Don’t get me wrong, anointing and spirituality are huge factors. I’m not going to sit here and try to judge someone’ s spirituality. If you want to, help yourself. I know that ultimately God will have the final say when it comes to a person’s career.

In my opinion, the next female gospel headliner is Kierra “Kiki” Sheard or someone else who isn’t in the industry yet. If you have a better contender, I would love to hear your opinions.

YESS!!!!!! Yolanda is the best female in the Gospel game. She’s my all time favorite. No one can top her….I also think Kierra will be the next biggest female to rise in popularity just like Yolanda. Kierra is going to have a album just like Mountain High…Valley Low (Yolanda’s 1999 2X Platinum Album). CeCe is a great singer but somtimes she doesent make music that appeal to the secular audience all the time. But I sure do hope that Yolanda’s next project get that boost that it needs….I hope she doesnt loose her toch……
